Prepared in Tirana in 2021, this study maps translations of Albanian-language literature into the languages of the European Union and Western Balkans during 2015–2020. It covers writers from Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and the diaspora, examining authors, translators, publishers, books and literary magazines.
The findings show an uneven international presence. Prose—particularly novels and short stories—is the most frequently translated book form, while poetry, essays and shorter prose appear more often in literary journals. Some languages maintain relatively active exchanges with Albanian, whereas many others receive few translations.
The report argues that Albanian literature remains insufficiently documented and promoted abroad, sometimes being represented by only a few internationally recognized names. Selection can be influenced by financing, temporary cultural trends, media visibility or geopolitical interests rather than sustained literary assessment.
Its recommendations include applying stronger aesthetic and professional criteria; entrusting selection to knowledgeable and independent experts; creating a dedicated digital catalogue of translated Albanian literature; improving long-term research and planning; and encouraging universities to teach less commonly studied languages for which qualified translators are scarce.
