Nazeli Kyuregyan-Baron delivered this presentation at the ThinkPub training event in Brussels on 10 April 2026. She explains how metadata connects publishers’ internal information with retailers, distributors, libraries, search engines and readers.
Kyuregyan-Baron introduces ONIX and the information required to describe, classify, market and sell a book effectively. She compares systems including CLIL, BISAC and THEMA, noting THEMA’s usefulness for comics, manga and titles that cross conventional genres. Consistent classification, accurate keywords and well-structured synopses materially affect visibility.
The presentation demonstrates how AI can generate or enrich metadata for new publications and extensive backlist catalogues. A live example using VeryStage Insight shows how publishers can accelerate metadata work while retaining human supervision over accuracy, positioning and the specific qualities of a title.
Kyuregyan-Baron also introduces Generative Engine Optimisation: preparing book information for discovery through AI-generated answers as well as conventional search results. With millions of competing titles, incomplete or outdated metadata can produce substantial sales differences, making discoverability a shared responsibility across editorial, production, marketing and rights teams.
