Philip Stone’s presentation formed part of the ThinkPub conference’s discussion of English-language book consumption on 13 November 2025. It supplies market evidence illustrating how imported English editions perform across several European countries.
Drawing on NielsenIQ BookData’s international panels, Stone compares total sales, English-language volume and market share in Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The Netherlands displays the strongest English-language share among the markets examined, while Germany generates the largest absolute volume because of its much larger book market.
The presentation analyses English-language sales by genre and identifies fiction as the dominant category, followed by children’s books and nonfiction. Bestseller comparisons show that local translations can substantially outperform English editions, but English-language versions still secure meaningful sales, particularly for internationally visible authors and titles associated with online reading communities.
Examples involving Freida McFadden, Rebecca Yarros and Ana Huang demonstrate how translated and English editions may follow different sales patterns. The data suggests that BookTok-driven attention operates within a more complex multilingual market in which release timing, title recognition, local translation, price and reader preference collectively determine which edition succeeds.
