Published in 2021, this companion report focuses on Albanian-language literature written by authors from Kosovo and translated into European Union and Western Balkan languages between 2015 and 2020. It uses bibliographic research, library catalogues and direct consultation with authors, translators and publishers.
The study identifies Italy, Sweden, Serbia, the English-speaking market and France as relatively active areas of exchange, while several other European languages show limited or no translation activity. It also considers Kosovo’s distinct historical, political and cultural circumstances while situating its literature within the wider Albanian-language literary field.
Its analysis emphasizes the importance of translators, literary agents, magazines, festivals, book fairs and residency programmes. Despite valuable initiatives, literature from Kosovo remains unevenly represented internationally and is sometimes absorbed into a generalized image of Albanian literature without sufficient recognition of its particular context.
The report recommends increased public support, recurring opportunities for foreign translators, workshops and professional seminars, translator awards, literary residencies, stronger participation in international fairs and festivals, cooperation with Kosovo’s embassies, and a professional catalogue connecting translators, authors and publishers.
