Published in October 2021, this report examines the translation and international circulation of Macedonian literature between 2015 and 2020. It maps the principal authors, translators, publishers, languages and institutions involved, placing the available figures within the wider development of North Macedonia’s publishing sector.
The study assesses public translation funding, Creative Europe, Traduki, international prizes, book fairs, festivals and residency programmes. It emphasizes that translators frequently perform several roles simultaneously—as selectors, advocates, editors, cultural mediators and informal literary agents.
Although most components of a translation ecosystem already exist, their work remains insufficiently coordinated. Limited funding, uneven international promotion and the absence of a strong book agency make it difficult to turn individual successes into a sustainable international presence.
The report recommends establishing a dedicated book agency; expanding grants for complete books, excerpts, reviews and promotion; offering competitive translation fees; supporting translators and university language programmes; and developing multi-year campaigns involving foreign publishers, editors and literary agents.
