Thinking Literature in Translation brought together leading voices from publishing research, literary studies, and cultural policy to examine the state of literary translation in Europe.

This panel discussion, A Snapshot of the European Translation Market: Trends, Developments and Challenges, explored how translation flows had evolved over the past decade: which languages had dominated as source languages, whether the number of literary fiction translations had been increasing or declining across European markets, and how emerging technologies—particularly AI-driven translation tools and voice generation—were reshaping core concepts of originality, authorship, and rights trading in publishing.

Drawing on extensive data from both large and small European markets, the speakers presented key findings from the forthcoming ThinkPub Translation Report, offering a comprehensive overview of translation as a cultural, economic, and strategic sector within contemporary publishing.

Speakers:
— Anja Kamenarič (Slovenia)
— Miha Kovač (Slovenia)
— Yana Genova (Bulgaria)

The conference was organised by the Next Page Foundation in partnership with the Cultural Center of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the Department of English and American Studies at Sofia University, and the Bulgarian Book Association. It formed part of ThinkPub — Thinking Publishing, a project co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria.
